Immunologists specialize in identifying and managing Primary Immune Deficiency. Primary Immune Deficiency comprises several rare, chronic disorders in which the body’s immune system is missing or does not function properly. Due to these deficiencies, patients with Primary Immune Deficiency are more susceptible to infections.
Patients who had PID may have symptoms which can include bronchitis, pneumonia, and frequent sinus infections.
An immunologist diagnoses Primary Immune Deficiency (PID) through a combination of detailed medical history, physical examination, and specialized laboratory testing. They often begin by assessing the patient’s pattern of infections, including frequency, severity, and type, as well as any family history of immune disorders. Blood tests are performed to measure levels of immune cells, antibodies, and complement proteins, while functional tests may assess how well the immune system responds to vaccines or infections.
Treatment is tailored to the type and severity of PID. After evaluation, Dr Hess will determine the best course of action to address an Immune Deficiency.
