Allergy Testing

What is Skin Prick Allergy Testing?

Skin prick allergy testing involves exposing the skin to a small amount of allergen and waiting 15 to 20 minutes to see if the body develops a "wheal" - a raised red bump. The development of a wheal indicates that the body has released histamine and the patient is allergic to the allergen. The skin prick is typically done on the upper back or arm. The intradermal testing is done on the upper arm.

What can be tested for?

The testing can be used to determine allergies to trees, grasses, weeds, pollen, dog, cat., dust mites mold and other environmental allergens. It can also be used to investigate food allergies.

Is it painful?

The skin prick testing is done on the most superficial layer of skin and causes very minimal, if any discomfort. The intradermal testing is done slightly deeper just under the skin.

Does insurance cover this test?

Yes, all major medical insurances cover this test. In addition, patients are able to pay out of pocket cash for the testing.

How long does the testing take?

30-45 minutes on average

What can be done after I have the results?

After you have your testing results, it can be determined if antihistamines (Zyrtec, Allegra) would be a good treatment or if the patient would benefit from allergy shots.
